How it works
- The weekly hours become the hours of a month: weekly hours × 52 weeks ÷ 12 months. At 40 hours a week that is 173.33 hours a month, at 20 hours 86.67.
- From monthly salary to hourly wage: gross monthly salary ÷ working hours per month. From hourly wage to monthly salary: hourly wage × working hours per month.
- The annual salary is twelve monthly salaries. Vacation and Christmas pay, bonuses and overtime are not included.
- The statutory minimum wage is €13.90 gross per hour since January 1, 2026 and €14.60 from January 1, 2027 (Fifth Minimum Wage Adjustment Ordinance). The calculator compares your hourly wage with it.
Worked example
€3,500 gross a month at 40 hours a week: 40 × 52 ÷ 12 = 173.33 hours a month, 3,500 ÷ 173.33 = €20.19 an hour. The other way round: €15 an hour at 40 hours is 15 × 173.33 = €2,600 a month. The minimum wage of €13.90 gives at least €2,409.33 a month at 40 hours.

Good to know
- There is no statutory conversion factor from weekly hours to monthly hours: the calculator uses 52 weeks a year, so 4.33 weeks a month. Some collective agreements use a slightly different factor; that changes the hourly wage by only a few per mille.
- The minimum wage applies per hour. If you work more hours than your contract provides for a fixed monthly salary, your actual hourly wage is lower; in that case, count the hours you really work.
- The minimum wage does not apply to everybody: exceptions concern, among others, young people under 18 without completed vocational training, certain internships and the long-term unemployed in the first six months (MiLoG § 22). Trainees have their own minimum pay.
- Gross is not what arrives in your account: taxes and social contributions are still deducted. The gross-to-net calculator shows the net pay for your gross monthly salary.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a monthly salary into an hourly wage?
Divide the gross monthly salary by the working hours per month. You get the monthly hours by multiplying the weekly hours by 52 and dividing by 12: at 40 hours a week that is 173.33. With €3,500 gross that is €20.19 an hour.
How many hours does a month have?
On average 4.33 weeks, so at 40 weekly hours 173.33 hours, at 38.5 hours 166.83 and at 20 hours 86.67. A real month has more or fewer working days depending on its length and the public holidays; a fixed monthly salary evens that out.
How high is the minimum wage?
The statutory minimum wage is €13.90 gross per hour since January 1, 2026 and €14.60 from January 1, 2027 (Fifth Minimum Wage Adjustment Ordinance). At 40 hours a week that is at least €2,409.33 a month.
How many hours may I work in a mini-job?
It depends on the hourly wage: in 2026 the limit is €603 a month. At the minimum wage of €13.90 that is a good 43 hours a month; at €15 a good 40. Simply divide the limit by your hourly wage.
Does overtime count toward the hourly wage?
With a fixed monthly salary and unpaid overtime, your actual hourly wage falls: €3,500 at 173.33 hours a month is €20.19, at 200 hours only €17.50. Whether overtime is paid or compensated with time off is set in the employment contract or the collective agreement.
