The end
0 of 5
-
A dismissal or a termination agreement needs written form; electronic form is not enough (BGB § 623).
-
The site’s notice period calculator gives the statutory period; the contract or a collective agreement may differ.
-
The period runs from receipt of the written dismissal (Dismissal Protection Act § 4); a lawyer or the union can advise.
-
Whoever ends the employment without good cause risks a 12-week disqualification period (SGB III § 159).
-
Severance does not count in the assessment pay of the unemployment benefit (SGB III § 151).
Registering as seeking work
0 of 3
-
With less than three months’ notice, within three days of learning of the end (SGB III § 38).
-
It decides the three-day deadline; a late registration can cost a one-week disqualification period (§ 159 para. 6).
-
The agency should hold it without delay after registration, in person or by video (§ 38 para. 1a).
Registering as unemployed
0 of 5
-
The registration as seeking work does not replace it. Earliest three months before the start (Federal Employment Agency; SGB III § 141).
-
An electronic residence permit or an eID card also works; identification goes through the BundID.
-
It is best to book the appointment online (Federal Employment Agency).
-
The registration then takes effect back to the day the agency was not open (§ 141 para. 2).
-
That is what the Federal Employment Agency says.
Claim and documents
0 of 5
-
The registration as unemployed counts as the day of the claim; for approval you need the claim and the employment certificate (Federal Employment Agency).
-
It must certify all facts important for the entitlement: activity, start, end, reason and pay (SGB III § 312).
-
The gross of this period determines the amount of the benefit (§§ 150 and 151).
-
Example: €3,000 gross, tax class I, no child: €41.56 a day, €1,246.80 a month.
-
Later changes only count under conditions (§ 153 paras. 2 and 3).
Afterward
0 of 6
-
A missed appointment can cost a one-week disqualification period (§ 159 para. 6).
-
Missing proof can cost a two-week disqualification period (§ 159 para. 5).
-
The second time it is 6, then 12 weeks (§ 159 para. 4).
-
It is offset after deducting taxes, social contributions, work expenses and a €165 monthly allowance (§ 155).
-
Otherwise the effect of the registration as unemployed ends when you start the activity (§ 141 para. 3).
-
You then register as unemployed again (§ 141 para. 3).

Good to know
- This list applies to employees who lose their job and claim Arbeitslosengeld I. For the self-employed, civil servants or anyone who needs further help after unemployment benefit, other routes apply; ask the employment agency.
- Registering as seeking work and registering as unemployed are two separate steps with their own deadlines: the first registration does not replace the second, and unemployment benefit is paid from the day of registration as unemployed at the earliest.
- Deadlines that cost money: three months or three days for the registration as seeking work, the first day of unemployment for the registration as unemployed, three weeks for the action against dismissal.
- The amount and duration are decided by the agency’s notice; this site’s calculator, like the Federal Employment Agency’s, gives a guide value.
Frequently asked questions
By when must I register as seeking work?
At the latest three months before the employment ends; if less than three months lie between learning of the end and the end, within three days of learning (SGB III § 38). A late registration can trigger a one-week disqualification period.
Is the registration as seeking work enough?
No. Registering as unemployed is a separate step and a condition for unemployment benefit: at the latest on the first day without employment, at the earliest three months earlier (Federal Employment Agency).
How do I register as unemployed?
Online with an ID card with the online ID function enabled (through the BundID), or in person at the employment agency with ID and current address, or a passport with a registration certificate.
When does payment start?
At the earliest on the day of registration as unemployed, if all conditions are met; after a disqualification period, correspondingly later. A full month counts 30 days.
How long do I have to challenge the dismissal?
Three weeks after receipt of the written dismissal (Dismissal Protection Act § 4). You can still claim unemployment benefit.
