How it works

Your pace as a percentage comes from your two numbers: (followers today ÷ followers then) to the power of 1 ÷ the months, minus 1. From 1,700 to 2,000 in 3 months is 5.6% a month: every month, your following grows by the same share, new followers included, just like compound interest.
Your pace as a number is the difference divided by the months: from 1,700 to 2,000 in 3 months is 100 new followers a month, every month.
As a percentage, in n months you’ll have today’s followers × (1 + pace)^n, and reaching your goal takes log(goal ÷ today) ÷ log(1 + pace) months, rounded up. As a number, in n months you’ll have today’s followers + n × the pace, and reaching your goal takes (goal − today) ÷ pace months.
The percentage is the fast road and the fixed number is the slow one. Real growth usually lands somewhere in between and changes from month to month.

Worked example

From 1,700 to 2,000 followers in 3 months: (2,000 ÷ 1,700)^(1/3) − 1 = 5.6% a month; as a number, 300 ÷ 3 = 100 a month. At the percentage you reach 10,000 in 30 months, because log(5) ÷ log(1.0557) = 29.7; at the fixed number, (10,000 − 2,000) ÷ 100 = 80 months. In 12 months you’d have 3,831 followers at the percentage, 3,200 at the fixed number.

Good to know

No growth stays steady: one video that takes off makes a jump, a break makes a dip. The calculator takes your average pace over the months you chose and stretches it into the future, nothing more.
Growing by a percentage gets harder as the numbers get bigger: 5% a month of 2,000 followers is 100 people; of 200,000, it’s 10,000. That’s why the fixed-number road is useful.
The more months you look at, the steadier your pace: a single month may have been a lucky or a slow one.
YouTube, for one, removes closed accounts and spam subscribers from your count, so the number can drop without anyone unfollowing you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my follower growth rate?

Divide today’s followers by the number you had before, raise the result to the power of 1 divided by the number of months, and subtract 1. From 1,700 to 2,000 in 3 months: 2,000 ÷ 1,700 = 1.176; to the power of 1/3 that’s 1.056, so you’re growing 5.6% a month.

When will I reach 10,000 followers?

With 2,000 followers today and 1,700 three months ago: in 30 months if you keep growing 5.6% a month, or in 80 months if you keep gaining the same 100 followers a month. Real growth usually lands between the two.

Percentage or fixed number: which is right?

Neither, on its own. As a percentage, every follower brings more, like compound interest, but that pace gets harder to hold as you grow. A fixed number assumes the same new followers every month, which is cautious. Look at them together as a range.

Why is my YouTube subscriber count rounded?

YouTube shows other people a shortened count: from 1,000 subscribers it updates every 10, from 10,000 every 100. You see the exact number in YouTube Studio, and YouTube leaves closed accounts and spam subscribers out of the count.
