How it works
- From the RAL, take off the INPS contributions you pay: usually 9.19%, plus 1% on the part above €56,224 (the first 2026 pension bracket). What is left is the taxable income.
- IRPEF is calculated on the taxable income in brackets: 23% up to €28,000, 33% from €28,000 to €50,000, 43% above (2026 budget law).
- From the IRPEF, take off the employee tax credit and, between €20,000 and €40,000, the additional credit from the wedge cut. Below €20,000 the wedge cut arrives instead as an extra sum on your payslip; up to €15,000 there is also the integration payment (€1,200 a year, if you have IRPEF to pay).
- Then the surtaxes: your region’s (each has its own rules) and your municipality’s. They are only paid if IRPEF remains to be paid after the tax credits.
- The year’s net divided by the monthly payments gives the average net per month.
Worked example
RAL €30,000 in Puglia, 13 payments, municipal surtax 0.8%: contributions €2,757.00; taxable income €27,243.00; gross IRPEF €6,265.89; tax credits €2,044.26 + €1,000.00 from the wedge cut; net IRPEF €3,221.63; regional surtax €460.28 (Puglia raised its rates in May 2026); municipal €217.94. Net for the year €23,343.15: €1,795.63 a month.

Good to know
- It is an estimate: the real payslip also depends on the collective agreement, the days worked, overtime, expense refunds and company bonuses.
- It does not consider dependent family members: if you have any, the tax credits are higher and the net goes up.
- The surtaxes you see on your payslip this year are those on last year’s income, withheld in installments. Here we calculate them on this year’s income, to give you the true cost.
- The net per month is an average: the net thirteenth is usually a bit lower than a normal month.
- It does not apply the contributions ceiling (€122,295 in 2026, only for those who started working from 1996): above that figure the estimate is less precise.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the thirteenth month lower than expected?
On the thirteenth you pay contributions and IRPEF as on the other months, but the employee tax credits are already spread over the twelve normal payslips. So, for the same gross, the net thirteenth is lower than a normal month. Over the year the numbers add up: this calculation gives you the average.
Why does the net change in July?
Two frequent reasons. If you filed the 730, in July or August the refund arrives on your payslip, or what you owe is withheld. And if your contract provides for the fourteenth month, it is usually paid in July.
What are the surtaxes?
They are two small taxes added to IRPEF: one goes to your region, one to your municipality, and each decides its own rates. On your payslip you pay them in installments: the regional one all the following year, the municipal one 30% as an advance in the year and the rest the following year.
Gross and net in a job ad: how do I compare them?
The RAL is a year’s gross, before contributions and taxes. The net per month also depends on the number of payments: €30,000 over 14 payments gives lighter payslips than €30,000 over 13, but the net for the year is the same. To compare two offers look at the RAL, and ask how many payments and which bonuses are included.
