US overtime pay calculator
What you are owed for a week with overtime: the regular rate, the overtime rate and your total pay, with the federal rule of time and a half over 40 hours.
Pay for the week
$950.00
5 overtime hours at $30.00 an hour
- 5 overtime hours
- Overtime rate $30.00
- $21.11 an hour on average
You worked 45 hours: 40 at the normal rate and 5 of overtime. Your regular rate is $20.00, so overtime is paid at time and a half, $30.00 an hour. Your total pay for the week is $950.00.
The overtime hours bring in $150.00 of your $950.00, which is 16%. Without the overtime premium you would have earned $900.00 for the same hours.
- This is for employees who are not exempt. Executive, administrative and professional employees, among others, are exempt if they are paid a salary of at least $684 a week ($35,568 a year) and do exempt duties: then there is no federal overtime.
- Some states require overtime by the day or double time after long hours, and some contracts pay more than the law. Use the box for your threshold and your rate if they differ from the federal rule.
- Federal law does not require overtime just because you work a Saturday, a Sunday or a holiday, unless the hours push you over the weekly threshold.

How it works
- Add up all the hours you worked in the workweek, a fixed period of 168 hours. Hours over 40 are overtime under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
- Work out your regular rate: all the pay you earned in the week for work, including shift pay and non-discretionary bonuses, divided by the hours you worked. For a plain hourly wage it is just the hourly rate.
- Pay the overtime hours at least one and a half times the regular rate. Since the straight pay for all the hours is already counted, the extra “half” is the premium: half the regular rate times the overtime hours.
Worked example
An employee paid $20 an hour works 45 hours: 40 × $20 = $800 for the normal hours, and 5 × $30 = $150 for the overtime. Total $950. With a $100 production bonus on a 50-hour week, the regular rate is $22: $1,100 + 10 × $11 = $1,210.

Good to know
- Overtime is counted by workweek, a fixed period of 168 hours that does not have to match the calendar week. You cannot average hours over two weeks: 50 hours one week and 30 the next is 10 hours of overtime, not zero.
- The regular rate is not always the hourly rate. If you also get shift pay or a production bonus for the week, it goes into the regular rate. A bonus that is a pure gift at the employer’s discretion does not.
- Salaried employees are not automatically exempt. To be exempt as an executive, administrative or professional employee you must earn at least $684 a week ($35,568 a year) and do the duties of the job. Job titles do not decide it.
- Some states give more than federal law: daily overtime after 8 hours, double time after longer days, or a day-of-rest premium. Where state and federal rules differ, the rule that gives the employee more applies.
- Time and a half is a minimum, not a rule for everything. Your contract, a union agreement or company policy may pay more.
- If you think you were not paid overtime you were owed, contact the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division or your state labor department.
Frequently asked questions
How is overtime pay calculated?
Hours over 40 in a workweek are paid at least one and a half times your regular rate. With a $20 wage, 5 overtime hours are paid at $30, so 45 hours earn $950.
What is time and a half?
One and a half times your regular rate of pay. If you earn $18 an hour, time and a half is $27.
Does federal law give double time?
No. The federal rule is time and a half for hours over 40 a week. Some states and employers pay double time after long days or weeks.
Do bonuses count toward overtime?
Non-discretionary bonuses and shift differentials are part of the regular rate, so they raise the overtime rate. A bonus that is entirely at the employer’s discretion is not.
Who does not get overtime?
Employees who are exempt: executive, administrative and professional employees paid at least $684 a week who do exempt duties, along with some other categories such as outside sales.
