How it works
- The hours of the week are converted into hours of the month: hours per week × 52 weeks ÷ 12 months. For a 35-hour full-time job that gives 151.67 hours a month, the legal monthly duration.
- From hourly rate to monthly salary, you multiply the rate by the hours of the month; from monthly salary to hourly rate, you divide. The annual salary is the hourly rate × the hours of the week × 52.
- Overtime, beyond 35 hours a week, is increased: without a collective agreement, 25% from the 36th to the 43rd hour and 50% from the 44th. An hour at +25% therefore counts as 1.25 paid hours. You cannot exceed 48 hours a week.
- For the Smic, the base rate is compared with €12.31 an hour: overtime increases, profit-sharing bonuses and expense reimbursements do not count.
Worked example
A salary of €2,000 gross for 35 hours a week: 35 × 52 ÷ 12 = 151.67 hours a month, so 2,000 ÷ 151.67 = €13.19 an hour, which is €0.88 more than the Smic. Conversely, the Smic of €12.31 an hour gives 12.31 × 151.67 = €1,867.02 a month and €22,404.20 a year, the Service Public figures. With 4 hours of overtime a week at €12.31: 4 × 12.31 × 1.25 = €61.55 a week, so €266.72 a month extra.

Good to know
- The hourly rate on this page is gross, before contributions. To know what is left in your account, run the gross monthly salary through the net salary calculator.
- The Smic counts the base salary, benefits in kind and productivity bonuses; it does not count overtime increases, profit-sharing bonuses or expense reimbursements. The collective agreement may provide a higher minimum: the employer then pays what the agreement provides.
- The Smic is reduced for employees under 18 with less than 6 months of practice in their branch: €11.08 at 17 and €9.85 at 16 or under. There is also a reduction for apprenticeships and professionalization contracts.
- Executives and employees on an annual day-rate arrangement have no overtime. Hours worked on top of the contract duration, in part-time work, are complementary hours: they follow other rules and are not calculated here.
- Nothing here is legal advice: for your contract, look at the payslip and the collective agreement, or ask the payroll department.
Frequently asked questions
How many hours a month for a full-time job?
For 35 hours a week, the legal monthly duration is 151.67 hours: 35 × 52 weeks ÷ 12 months (Service Public).
How do I convert monthly salary to hourly rate?
Divide the gross monthly salary by 151.67 for a full-time job at 35 hours: €2,000 ÷ 151.67 = €13.19 an hour. For another number of hours a week, first calculate the hours of the month: hours × 52 ÷ 12.
What is the hourly Smic?
€12.31 gross an hour, so €1,867.02 gross a month for 35 hours, according to Service Public (page checked 1 June 2026). The net, given as a guide, is €9.74 an hour.
How is overtime paid?
Beyond 35 hours a week, without a collective agreement, the first 8 hours (from the 36th to the 43rd) are increased by 25% and the following by 50%. At €15 an hour, 4 hours of overtime bring 4 × 15 × 1.25 = €75 a week, so €325 a month. With 10 hours in the week: 8 × 15 × 1.25 + 2 × 15 × 1.50 = €195.
How many hours can you work at most?
Actual working time cannot exceed 48 hours in a single week, nor 44 hours a week on average over 12 consecutive weeks, and 10 hours a day except by derogation (Service Public).
