Germany unit price (Grundpreis) calculator: price per kg and per liter
From the price and quantity of a pack, the price per kilogram, liter, meter or square meter, as the German Price Indication Ordinance requires.
Unit price per kilogram
€4.98
€2.49 for 500 g
- per 100 grams: €0.50
- Pack: 500 g
At €2.49 for 500 g, the unit price is €4.98 per kilogram: this number is shown next to the total price.
For prepacked goods the unit of quantity is 1 kilogram or 1 liter; 100 grams or 100 milliliters are provided only for loose goods. The line «per 100 grams» is therefore only a comparison.

The price in different units of quantity
| Quantity | Price | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| per kilogram | €4.98 | the unit price under PAngV § 5 para. 1 |
| per 100 grams | €0.50 | for comparison; intended for loose goods (§ 5 para. 2) |
| 500 g | €2.49 | the total price of the pack (§ 3) |
How it works
- The unit price is the price per unit of quantity of the goods, including VAT and other price components (PAngV § 2 No. 4). You calculate: total price divided by the quantity in the unit of quantity.
- The unit of quantity is 1 kilogram, 1 liter, 1 cubic meter, 1 meter or 1 square meter of the goods (PAngV § 5 para. 1). If the quantity is in grams, milliliters, centiliters or centimeters, convert it first: 500 g is 0.5 kg, 330 ml is 0.33 l, 25 cl is 0.25 l, 250 cm is 2.5 m.
- The unit price is shown next to the total price (PAngV § 4 para. 1): this makes packs of different sizes comparable. For loose goods by weight or volume, 100 grams or 100 milliliters are also allowed (PAngV § 5 para. 2).
Worked example
€2.49 for 500 g: €2.49 ÷ 0.5 kg = €4.98 per kilogram (for comparison €0.50 per 100 g). €1.29 for 330 ml: €1.29 ÷ 0.33 l = €3.91 per liter. €14.99 for 250 cm: €14.99 ÷ 2.5 m = €6.00 per meter (exactly €5.996).

Good to know
- The unit price is mandatory for goods offered by weight, volume, length or area, in prepacked packs, open packs or as sales units without wrapping (PAngV § 4 para. 1). It is shown next to the total price and must be unmistakable, clearly recognizable and easy to read. If it is identical with the total price, for example for a pack of exactly one kilogram, it may be omitted.
- PAngV § 4 para. 3 names exceptions, among others for goods under 10 grams or 10 milliliters, for goods of different unmixed products, for goods in vending machines, for small direct sellers such as farm shops with service and for certain cosmetics and perfumes.
- For goods with a drained weight, the unit price refers to the stated drained weight (PAngV § 5 para. 4): enter the drained weight as the quantity then.
- Household detergents may be referred to a usual application instead of kilogram or liter (PAngV § 5 para. 5). This calculator is not meant for that, nor for goods sold only by the piece.
- For goods usually sold in quantities of 100 liters and more, 50 kilograms and more or 100 meters and more, the unit of quantity that corresponds to general trade understanding applies (PAngV § 5 para. 1 sentence 2). The calculator points this out.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the unit price?
Divide the total price by the quantity in kilograms, liters, meters or square meters. €2.49 for 500 g is €2.49 ÷ 0.5 kg = €4.98 per kilogram.
How do I work out the price per liter when the quantity is in milliliters?
Convert the milliliters to liters (divided by 1,000) and divide the price by that: €1.29 for 330 ml is €1.29 ÷ 0.33 l = €3.91 per liter.
Must I state the price per 100 g or per 1 kg?
For prepacked goods the unit of quantity is 1 kilogram, 1 liter, 1 meter, 1 square meter or 1 cubic meter of the goods (PAngV § 5 para. 1). 100 grams and 100 milliliters are allowed only for loose goods (PAngV § 5 para. 2).
Do I need a unit price for every product?
Only for goods offered by weight, volume, length or area (PAngV § 4 para. 1), and not for the exceptions of § 4 para. 3, for example under 10 grams or 10 milliliters.
Does the unit price include VAT?
Yes: the unit price is the price per unit of quantity of a good including VAT and other price components (PAngV § 2 No. 4). So calculate with the final price the customer pays.
