Good to know
- The rules in this list apply to people working with a signed work card under the CLT. For domestic workers, civil servants, interns and other regimes, the rules are partly different.
- The payslip changes from month to month: overtime, extras, absences, vacation and the 13th move the net. The tax withheld at source is an advance, and is settled in the income tax return.
- What the category’s collective agreement sets weighs heavily: pay floor, hours, benefits and meal voucher can be better than the legal minimum.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to sign a contract in writing?
Not necessarily: the contract can be agreed tacitly or expressly, verbally or in writing (CLT, art. 443). In writing, you know what was agreed, and it is what is worth asking for. Trial and fixed-term contracts have duration limits (CLT, art. 445).
How long can a trial contract last?
At most 90 days (CLT, art. 445, sole paragraph). If extended more than once, it becomes indefinite-term (art. 451).
How soon does the company register my work card?
The company has 5 working days to record in the work card the hiring date, pay and special conditions (CLT, art. 29). In the digital card, you should see the data within 48 hours of the entry.
What is deducted from my salary?
The INSS, from 7.5% to 14% by bracket, up to the R$988.09 ceiling in 2026; income tax withheld at source, which in 2026 comes out at zero for taxable income of up to R$5,000 a month; and what you agreed, such as the transport voucher (up to 6% of base salary). The FGTS is deposited by the company and does not come out of your salary.
